Already a major employer in Indiana, Amazon Web Services has announced plans to spend $11 billion on new data centers it will build in the state. The proposed location is St. Joseph County in north central Indiana. Although exact locations have not been revealed, the largest city in the region, South Bend, has a population of over 270,000, according to the 2020 census. The new data centers are expected to create at least 1,000 new jobs, reports Total Telecom.

“This investment will include our continuing commitment to fostering workforce development and educational initiatives in areas where we operate,” stated AWS’s Director of Economic Development, Roger Wehner.

Governor Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, expressed their support for Amazon’s latest venture. The company has invested $21.5 billion in the state since 2010, and continues to grow its ties with Indiana. As part of the larger data center plan, AWS vowed to contribute up to $7 million to support infrastructure improvements for residents in the local community.

Amazon has also indicated that it intends to operate similar data centers in both Mississippi and Virginia.
