Verizon recently constructed a 125-foot cell tower near Peckinpah Ridge in order to improve coverage and 3G data service in the Eastern Madera County. Volney Dunavan reported for the Sierra Star that, “‘We can more easily call our command center,’ says Diann Miller, Captain of Madera County Volunteer Fire Station 11, noting that the availability of cell service also increases the chance of a visitor to our area being able to get help in an emergency situation.”

While the tower is 3G right now, Verizon plans to move on to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) before the end of the year to bring customers quicker service and better coverage. The tower isn’t currently set up for 4G because they need to get the Ethernet running to the tower site in order for data to be transmitter quicker.
