New FCC Broadband Maps Coming

The FCC intends to release the next version of its broadband maps next Tuesday, May 30. The maps are key to identifying high-speed internet locations and areas that lack broadband as NTIA gets closer to beginning to distribute millions in broadband infrastructure deployment grants to states.

The new maps will show broadband availability as of December 31, 2022, according to FCC officials. The new version shows about 1 million new locations.

The agency’s map contractor, CostQuest, collects data from providers twice a year. They have two months to report their data against the FCC’s list. Map data is updated every two weeks, agency officials told reporters.

The data can be challenged by the public and stakeholders. Challenges can include the maps displaying a wrong address, unit count, or a location’s placement on the maps, for example.
